Napu

  1. Napu was a Double Yellow Headed Amazon Parrot. It is said they can live up to 60 years in captivity. We aren’t sure how old he was when we acquired him, but he was a part of our family for 50 years. Hand raised parrots weren’t common back then (I call it the dark ages of parrot ownership) so I found Napu in a pet store and I nagged my poor mother until she relented and purchased him for me. Since my sister and I were young at the time, it is no wonder that Napu’s favorite word was “Ma”. My sister and I grew up, went to college, and entered the working world while Napu stayed at home base with “Ma”. Over the years there were times when he went back and forth between my mother’s house and my sister’s house due to our mother’s aging process. Our mother reached the point where she needed to move out of her house, so Mom and Napu (and Mom’s 3 cats) moved in with me. After three years, my mother died and over the next few years each of her cats died. Napu and I persevered along with my own cats and dogs who would share our life and then pass on. Napu was a constant. It seemed that he would be around forever. But even Napu started to slow down over the past year or two until he couldn’t go on any longer. But, for 50 years he was a powerhouse. He loved to sing and dance and ride in the car. He absolutely loved pizza and popcorn and, when I brought him to work with me, he brought a lot of joy to the senior citizens. Napu, I hope you are flying and flying and flying, to your heart’s content, over the rainbow bridge. Until we meet again…

  2. God Bless Napu. It was wonderful getting to know him. May he rest in peace.

  3. He was so Majestic! I will miss him!

  4. Dearest Napu. Thank you so much for challenging my notion that I don’t like birds. You were such a wonderful character; such an integral part of Rita’s menagerie. I will miss you more than I can say. May you have a joyful next adventure, wherever you may be.

  5. I have had the honor of caring for Napu and his pet siblings over the past few years. Napu always fascinated me and over time I think we became friends. I’d talk to him and he’d nod agreement to whatever I babbled at him. I will miss him very much.
    Fly high, my beautiful friend!

  6. Napu was a very colorful and happy bird. He cheered up so many of our residents. I always enjoyed listening to him talk. He will be greatly missed. Fly high my sweet feathered friend.

  7. Ahhhh, Napu…when you were adopted by us, you made chicken clucks and monkey screams. We don’t know what your life was before us except for those little hints. We do know you filled our lives with song, dance, and joy for so many decades. You survived the occasional flight into a window and even once onto my cat, Storm. You enjoyed M&Ms before the internet told us chocolate was toxic to birds; you showed no ill effects. When you lived with me, I had the honor of becoming “Ma” for a while. My neighbor almost called Child Services since you would scream, “Ma!” when I walked to the pool; she thought I was leaving my child unattended at home. The UPS delivery person didn’t understand why I didn’t come to the door after he knocked since my “child” was hailing, “Ma! Hurry up!”; I was at work and you were not a real child though you acted like one your entire life with us. You even had your brief moment of fame at the Kennedy Center by appearing via telephone with the real Ma when Dame Edna phoned during one of her skits. You were funny and mischievous…and always the life of the party. I hope you’re partying with wings spread as you enter animal heaven…and eating as many M&Ms as you darned well please.

  8. Napu RIP you where a good baby and your mom will miss you. You will be forever in her ❤️.
